Nolvadex (Tamoxifen) is a medicine developed to reduce the body’s production of estrogen in women. In 2021, the UK’s Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) had slashed the price of Nolvadex to £1.34 per kilogram (kg) in the UK, which was up 3.7% in January 2021 compared to the same period a year earlier.
Nolvadex is a prescription medicine, meaning that a doctor prescribes it for conditions they think may be caused by the estrogen hormone. For example, the NHS can prescribe Nolvadex to treat breast cancer or autoimmune conditions.
The range of conditions and doses prescribed by a doctor will depend on the condition being treated and the specific dose prescribed. However, the exact range can be found by the prescribing clinician on a case by case basis.
In some cases, a doctor may prescribe Nolvadex for another condition, such as enlarged breasts. This may lead to a drop in the prescribed dose, or it may be prescribed to the patient’s body as a lower dose may be prescribed.
Nolvadex works by blocking the conversion of estrogen to estradiol, a hormone that stimulates the growth of breast tissue. This can reduce the risk of hormone-sensitive breast cancer and other estrogen-related conditions.
Nolvadex is also sometimes prescribed to women who are pregnant or breastfeeding due to its potential to alter the cervical mucus, uterus, or fallopian tubes. This can cause symptoms such as pain during sex, discharge from the penis, or infertility.
Nolvadex has also been used by men to reduce the risk of prostate cancer. This is when a man cannot produce enough testosterone or sperm.
Tamoxifen, or Nolvadex as it is also known, is a drug developed to reduce the body’s production of estrogen in women. It is widely used for conditions such as breast cancer, irregular vaginal bleeding, and enlarged breasts.
Tamoxifen works by binding to estrogen receptors in target cells. Tamoxifen binds to estrogen receptors and blocks the virus that causes these diseases. This prevents the cancer cells from spreading and causing cancer to the rest of the body.
Tamoxifen is usually taken orally, with or without food, as prescribed, depending on the condition being treated. The doctor will usually start the medication in the evening, but other times, the medication may be taken on an as-needed basis.
Some of the side effects of Tamoxifen may include:
In rare cases, Tamoxifen can also cause other side effects, although not everyone gets them.
Tamoxifen can be taken with or without food. However, if a person is allergic to Tamoxifen or has a stomach ulcer, a tamoxifen tablet or capsule should not be taken with food.
If a person experiences symptoms of allergy or hypersensitivity, or if they become wheezing, skin rash, hives, itching, swelling of their face or lips, fever, or swollen glands, they should seek medical attention immediately.
Tamoxifen can increase the risk of breast cancer. If you are at an increased risk of breast cancer, talk to your doctor about using tamoxifen for breast cancer prevention.
Tamoxifen can also be used to reduce the risk of other forms of breast cancer, such as endometrial cancer and ovarian endometrial cancer.
Tamoxifen is not approved for use in children below eight years old. It is not approved for use in women under the age of eight.
Nolvadex (Tamoxifen) is a prescription medicine that is sometimes used by athletes or bodybuilders to reduce their chances of getting steroid users. The drug was first introduced in the UK in 1995.
Many bodybuilders also use Nolvadex to increase their steroid levels. This is when a steroid is transformed into estrogens.
The drug is available as 0.5, 1, 2, or 4 mg tablets.

Tamoxifen is a selective estrogen receptor modulator (SERM) that is primarily used to treat breast cancer in postmenopausal women. Tamoxifen works by blocking the effects of estrogen in the body, thereby reducing estrogen levels. By selectively inhibiting the effects of estrogen in the body, Tamoxifen helps prevent the growth of cancer cells, reducing the risks of cancer recurrence and cancer-related hospitalizations.
Tamoxifen is generally well-tolerated. However, it should be used with caution in patients with a history of breast cancer or those taking certain hormonal therapies. The occurrence of adverse reactions such as hot flashes, joint pain, or nausea has been reported, and these adverse reactions are generally mild and transient. In case of suspected adverse reactions, the patient should be monitored carefully and the use of Tamoxifen should be discontinued. Some adverse reactions have also been reported, which may be reversible. The most common adverse reactions associated with tamoxifen use are hot flashes, nausea, and fatigue. Patients should be advised to have regular blood tests and a physical exam if they are concerned about their risk of hot flashes or joint pain.
Adverse reactions reported with Tamoxifen treatment are generally mild and transient, with only a few cases of allergic reactions reported. Although rare, these reactions have been reported, especially in the elderly, who are more susceptible to the effects of Tamoxifen. If any adverse reactions occur, discontinuation should be considered. In some cases, allergic reactions may be associated with use of Tamoxifen in combination with other treatments, such as chemotherapy, radiation therapy, or surgery. Adverse reactions may be reversible, and discontinuation should be considered in such cases.

The manufacturer may have changed the dose, or you have changed the way you take it.
If you are going to have surgery or you are taking any form of surgery, you must take Tamoxifen as directed by your doctor. This is to ensure that Tamoxifen works properly.
The most common side effects of Tamoxifen treatment are hot flashes, joint pain, and nausea. These are mild and temporary, and will diminish as the body gets used to the treatment. However, some side effects may be more serious. These are listed below.
The dosage of Tamoxifen for postmenopausal women varies depending on the individual. Your doctor will determine the appropriate dosage for you. It is important to follow your doctor's instructions regarding how to take Tamoxifen or how often you should take it.
Your doctor may change the dose or recommend an interval of at least 4 to 8 weeks between doses. Your doctor will advise you on how long you should take Tamoxifen and how often you should take it.
If you miss a dose of Tamoxifen, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.
